Mayor officially opens new Safestore at Watford Riverwell and welcomes new provisions and jobs

Residents, partners and stakeholders gathered to celebrate the official opening of Safestore, the UK’s largest self storage company, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of the Watford Riverwell regeneration scheme.

The opening event welcomed members of the local community, project partners and invited guests, with the re-elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor officially cutting the ribbon to declare the development open following the completion of construction.

Safestore forms part of the wider Watford Riverwell regeneration programme, a long-term partnership between Kier Property and Watford Borough Council, which is delivering new homes, community facilities and employment opportunities while creating a vibrant new neighbourhood for the town.

The completion and opening of Safestore represents another important step forward for the regeneration project, which continues to reshape the area of West Watford and provide lasting benefits for residents and businesses.

Speaking at the event, Re-elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “It is fantastic to see Safestore officially open and ready to welcome the community. Developments such as this demonstrate the positive impact that investment and public-private partnership can have in creating places where people can live, work and thrive. I am delighted that this new business will provide a useful service and new jobs for the town.”

Leigh Thomas, Group Managing Director for Kier Property, spoke on behalf of the Watford Riverwell partnership: “The opening of Safestore is a proud moment for everyone involved in the project. From the start, our ambition has been to deliver high-quality developments that support the wider regeneration of the area and create lasting value for Watford. We are pleased to celebrate this achievement with our partners, stakeholders and the local community.”

Mark Taylor, Property Director at Safestore, said: “It is fantastic to officially open Safestore Watford on Thomas Sawyer Way. This modern fourth generation facility has been built to serve the local community, offering storage solutions for both residents and businesses. We are particularly proud of its sustainable credentials, including solar panels, electric vehicle charging and an EPC A rating, which demonstrate our commitment to responsible, low carbon development.”

Since construction began, the project has supported local employment opportunities and contributed to the continued regeneration of the area, helping to deliver the vision for Watford Riverwell as a thriving and sustainable destination.

The opening ceremony concluded with guests touring the completed development and learning more about the next phases of the wider regeneration programme, including the new Riverwell Square which is currently on site.
